The fire ripped through a North Fairmount apartment building around 8 p.m. Friday.
It took 40 firefighters almost an hour to get the blaze under control at the eight unit building located at the 2600 block of Beekman Street.
The fire began on the third floor while the family was out to dinner.
Although the cause is still under investigation, residents said that there has been an electrical problem since the building was recently renovated.
"When you turn on the light switch in the bedroom -- the switch stays on and goes off by itself. It seems to have a short light switch," said Danielle Jackson, a resident of the apartment where the fire began.
Chief Glenn Coleman estimated the damages at $80,000 for the old building.
