A fire on Detroit's east side claimed the life of a 2-year-old boy on Friday, according to fire officials.
Witnesses said the fire started on the second floor of the home on Albany Street. The mattress the little boy had been sleeping on caught fire after being too close to a space heater, fire officials said.
Witnesses said the mother, father and daughter escaped safely, running outside wrapped in bed sheets. Witnesses said the father attempted to go back into the home to rescue the little boy, but firefighters held him back, deeming it unsafe to go back inside.
