Two people were killed Monday in a construction accident at a South Side residential building.
The fourth floor of the building under construction at 8216 S. Racine Ave. collapsed down to the third floor, killing two workers.
NBC5 learned that a crane being used in the building of the four-story structure crashed through the roof of the building.
Fire media affairs firefighter Josh Dennis described what remained of the building as being as unstable.
Emergency crews at 3:20 p.m. were conducting a search, according to Dennis. He did not know if there were any injuries in addition to the fatalities.
Fire Media Affairs Director Larry Langford was at the scene, Dennis said.
The residential building was going to be a home for seniors, called Holiness Home of Vision, according to the Rev. Henry Sutton.
The building is next door to Holiness is the Way Gospel Temple, 8210 S. Racine Ave., Sutton, pastor for the church, said in a phone interview.
He said the church would run the home after it was built.
Sutton did not hear or see the accident, and could not provide any details about it.
