INDIANAPOLIS --

A woman was injured and five people escaped a fire at an apartment early Tuesday morning on the city's southwest side.

The fire began after 6:30 a.m. in the 600 block of Division Street in an upstairs apartment.

A resident told firefighters that she was burning a candle, fell asleep and awoke to a room full of smoke.

The woman got out of the apartment but was taken to Wishard Memorial Hospital for observation. She was listed in stable condition.

Indianapolis fire officials said the building is a double residence, split into four apartments.

Damage was estimated at $35,000. Officials said all of the apartments have working smoke detectors.
