San Diego Firefighter Hurt Battling Blaze
SAN DIEGO --
A firefighter is recovering after an early morning house fire broke out in Barrio Logan.
The fire near 31st Street and National Avenue knocked out power to the neighborhood. San Diego Gas & Electric crews quickly began working to restore power to about a dozen homes in the area. Workers said some of the powerlines had melted during the blaze, but power was restored by 5:30 a.m.
There were some challenges fighting the flames.
"There was a lot of fences and gates and stuff we had to get through, plus the structures were heavily involved by the time we got here," the fire captain on the scene said.
Three residents who lived in separate residences on the property were evacuated. Two of those structures were bungalows or converted garages, and they were completely destroyed. A home on the front of the property lost power but was not damaged.
The fire department said the blaze began at about 1 a.m. and took about 20 minutes to put out. Its cause is unknown, but damage is estimated at more than $100,000.
