A metro family is looking for a warm place to stay after a fire gutted their home early Tuesday.

Investigators said the family built a fire in the fireplace Monday night, thought the ashes were safe to throw away and put them in a paper bag near the garage.

The homeowner and her grandson were inside the home when the fire started.

"Burnt coals to a paper bag to catching the house on fire, (it was) just us at home. We got out of the house," said Dustin Jones, the grandson of the homeowner.

Crews said the fire burned through the attic, and did $125,000 worth of damage.

The blaze couldn't have come at a worse time for the family. The homeowner's husband recently died, and his funeral is scheduled for Tuesday afternoon.
