Explosive Blaze Hampers Florida Firefighters

A house in Orlando, Fla., with ammunition in every room of the structure was destroyed by fire early Thursday after firefighters were forced away because of explosions. Authorities said the fire sparked in a home located on Arundel Drive near Hiawassee Road and Colonial Drive at about 2:30 a.m. Thursday. When firefighters arrived, the structure was engulfed in flames and little explosions were igniting. The owner, Thomas Dorley, who is a hunter, said he had 40 pounds of black powder in a room that apparently exploded. Detective Cindy Campina of the state fire marshal's office said the ammunition did not start the fire. "The homeowner was stripping the doors inside his house -- old varnish on the doors," Campina said. "He was using paint thinner to do that which is what you use to do that. He had a halogen lamp to light his work and according to what he told me he had been doing it all day long almost to right up when the fire started." Dorley said the fire destroyed his new Corvette as well. "I've lived here 30 years and the Corvette has been here a week," Dorley said. The official cause of the fire is still under investigation.
