KANSAS CITY, Kan. --
A 73-year-old woman died early Monday morning when she was unable to find her way out of her burning home.
Firefighters were called to North 75th Street and Freeman Avenue at about 4 a.m.
Family members told KMBC that Evelyn Wright was in the early stages of Alzheimer's disease and she apparently became disoriented and could not get out of the burning home.
"My mom was a Christian woman. My mom was a very, very loving and caring person. She had Alzheimer's and she just could not find her way out," daughter Jean Chavis told KMBC's Brenda Washington. "I'm going to miss her."
Wright's daughter and four grandchildren safely escaped. Firefighters found Wright near a back bedroom.
Relatives said Wright had helped her four grandchildren get out of the house before she died.
Washington reported that investigators have questioned a 7-year-old boy about the cause of the fire. The boy is a foster child who lived in the house.
