CHICAGO --

A man in his 30s was hospitalized in serious condition after jumping from the second floor of a burning building in an extra-alarm fire Tuesday morning on the Near South Side.

The man jumped from the second floor of the four-story building with businesses on the first floor, according to Fire Media Affairs Cmdr. Will Knight. The man was taken to Mercy Hospital and Medical Center fair but stable condition, Knight said.

The fire started at about 4:30 a.m. in a four-story building in the 2400 block of South Wabash Avenue, according to Knight, who said the blaze had been elevated to a second alarm shortly thereafter.

A preliminary police report indicated 30 people were displaced by the fire, according to a police Bomb & Arson Section sergeant. Many of them waited in warming buses as crews fought the blaze.

"All four floors are on fire," according to Knight, who said several rescues were made.
