HAMILTON, Ohio --

When 78-year-old Mary Thurmonds house in Hamilton burst into flames Saturday morning, she already had faith on her side.

"She was at home reading her Bible that morning, sure was, said her son, Allen Thurmond, who credits that early-morning Bible study with saving his mothers life.

Mary Thurmond was in bed when she heard her smoke detector go off, and her son said she opened her door to find an inferno.

She fled the blaze by jumping two stories from her window, and her family said the escape proved adrenaline knows no age limit.

I would have never thought she would have actually jumped off a window, said daughter Denise Thurmond. Never in a million years I would have thought my mother would do that.

A witness said that Thurmond received numerous cuts from broken glass outside the burning building.

She was bleeding out of both legs and hands and was cut pretty bad, said Brian Neal, who helped rescue the woman.

Despite the narrow escape, Thurmonds family doesnt consider her lucky.

We don't believe in luck, said Allen Thurmond. Luck is like rolling dice, you might come up craps, but with God all things are possible. I truly believe that, and that says it all right there."

Mary Thurmond remains at University Hospital, where she has had hip replacement surgery and screws inserted into at least one of her ankles.

Relatives said Thurmond faces a lengthy recovery, but they expect her to be fine.
