Las Vegas Fire & Rescue fire investigators are looking into what caused a fire that damaged a vacant downtown four-plex late Friday night. There were no reported injuries during the incident.
Fire dispatchers received numerous calls at 10:30 P.M. Friday night that a building at the corner of 10th Street and Stewart Avenue was on fire. When firefighters arrived a few minutes later, smoke and flames were showing from the 1-story brick building. The building consists of four townhouses connected as one building commonly called a four-plex. The addresses of the units are 1015-1019-1025-1029 Stewart Avenue. The fire appeared to be in laundry room of the 1025 unit. Damage was confined to the one unit; damage was estimated at $10,000.
The building is vacant and appeared to be secured. But it was evident that homeless people were staying in the building and numerous cigarette butts, lighters, matches and candles could be found throughout the building. The exact cause of the fire could not be determined, but remains under investigation. There were no reported injuries.
