A Steubenville family is homeless on Thanksgiving after fire rips through and destroys their two-story house on Pittsburgh Street in the Labelle section of the city.
Assistant Fire Chief Carlo Capaldi of the Steubenville Fire Department said, "That's the bad part, you got a holiday. Everyone's supposed to be getting together with friends and family and then something like this happens. It can really take a lot out of the family."
The sound of a smoke alarm warned a mother and her teenage son and daughter to get out of the home.
Elizabeth Mason, who lives across the street, said, "They were yelling kind of loud and I walked outside and there was all this smoke and there were huge flames coming out of the window."
Firefighters pulled up to the home Thursday morning. They could see flames coming out of the rear window and spreading to the back porch.
The Steubenville Fire Department said, "the fire was coming out of the kitchen, but they have no evidence on what started the fire."
The American Red Cross is stepping in to help this family put their lives back together, and is starting by giving them food and clothes.
Christian Brown from the American Red Cross said, "You realize that it's a lot more important to do this kind of work than to worry about how the food is going to get on the table. These people no longer have food. It kind of brings it all home. You do have a lot to be thankful for."
The family who lost their home told The Red Cross they are going to stay with family members.
