D.C. firefighters say about a dozen senior citizens and disabled residents were rescued from a two-alarm fire Wednesday.
D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services spokesman Alan Etter said firefighters were called to an apartment complex in the 400 block of H Street just after 11 p.m.
Etter said first arriving units encountered heavy fire coming from the first floor of the apartment building.
One of the people rescued was a blind woman who firefighters said lived next door to the apartment where blaze started.
Officials said five people were treated on the scene and a 61-year-old woman was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Firefighters said the blaze was contained to the first floor of the building.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
