KING OF PRUSSIA, Pa. -- Firefighters battled a massive, five-alarm fire that engulfed a North DeKalb Pike carpet store Monday night.

The flames weren't under control until about 2 a.m. Tuesday.

The fire was reported around 9 p.m. inside King Carpet Mart on the 1200 block of North DeKalb Pike. The structure was soon fully-involved and the roof collapsed.

Montgomery County authorities reported no injuries, but numerous fire companies responded to the scene of the massive blaze.

NBC 10's Harry Hairston reported that firefighters were summoned by passersby who saw the flames.

The business was empty at the time but had been under construction as an addition was being put on the back of it.

Early indications were that the cause of the fire was not suspicious, but the building appeared to be a total loss, as fire officials told Hairston there was no way the structure could be saved.

"It was a big explosion, pretty much. That's what we heard, and we backed away. Everybody ran. We were amazed at how high and how smoky the flames and smoke were," one witness said.

Sgt. Al Everson of the Upper Merion Police Department said an explosion that occurred approximately 10 minutes after police were on the scene was believed to be caused by a propane tank in the building's rear.

Residents of one home next-door to the building were evacuated.
