Mike Campbell Reports On Enon Apartment Fire
The fire started just after 1 a.m. Thursday at a 2-story apartment building at 6631 Rita Drive.
Fire officials said one man managed to help save three of the residents who were trapped inside an upstairs apartment. Brett Woldruff ran down the street to a home his family is moving out of, grabbed a ladder and took it back to the apartment building. He propped the ladder against an upstairs deck in the back of the building.
Woldruff said "I climbed up first and there was an elderly lady and she couldn't get over the railing. We lifted her over the railing and I came around and stood on the ladder then she got on the ladder and got down." Two other peole that lived in the same apartment also came down that ladder.
Firefighters said eleven people in all lived in the building. Everyone made it out safely but most residents escaped with nothing but the clothes on their backs. Crews managed to get the flames under control in about 30 minutes, but were briefly called back a couple hours later after the flames sparked again.
Investigators from the state fire marshals office spent several hours at the scene. At this time, the fire remains under investigation.
