The adults were listed in critical condition at 5 p.m. and the children's conditions were not known.

Officials said one of the adults was the children's mother, and that they found her inside the condo's kitchen lying across the unconscious youngsters.

They said the woman's breathing was labored.

At about 3:30 p.m., smoke and flames spewed from the roof of the condo, located in the 4600 block of Country Creek.

However, firefighters had virtually doused the blaze by 4:30.

"Very intense, fast-moving fire," Dallas Fire Rescue Lt. Joel Lavender said. "At this time, it's too early to find out exactly what happened here."

Lavender said the damage to the building was "severe."

He also said four firefighters suffered minor injuries.

Investigators were at the scene trying to determine what caused the fire.
