D.C. Firefighters Unable To Rescue Disabled Man

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

A spokesman for D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services said a physically disabled man was unable to escape from a burning home in Northeast.

Alan Etter said the fire started in a house in the 1600 block of Lawrence Street about 1 a.m. A 73-year-old man, who was unable to escape, was found in an upstairs bedroom, Etter said.

Officials said when firefighters found him he wasn't breathing.

Etter said he was transported to the Medstar unit of the Washington Hospital Center where he was pronounced dead.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
