A shirtless man with a weapon was standing in the front yard.

Police arrested a man on Friday who allegedly kept Escondido firefighters at bay as they tried battle a blaze that destroyed at an Escondido home.

The fire occurred in the 4000 block of Inspiration Lane late Friday afternoon, Escondido fire officials said. Neighbors said they smelled smoke and saw flames coming from the house.

Firefighters en route to the scene were told that a shirtless man with a weapon was standing in the front yard, fire officials said. The firefighters were told to stand back and wait for police to arrive. By the time firefighters could battle the blaze, flames had engulfed the home, which police said was owned by the man. It was not clear whether anyone was inside the home as firefighters worked to put out the fire.

Investigators were looking into the fire to determine whether it was the work of an arsonist, though one fire official said the fire looked suspicious.

No weapon was recovered, police officials said.
