Did Massage Chair Cause Florida Blaze?

Nov. 9, 2006
Investigators say a massage chair might be the cause of a duplex blaze.
Sanford firefighters had two homes to save Thursday morning when a duplex caught fire on Castle Brewer Court. Inspectors with the Sanford Fire Department said the fire started in the living room of one of the units. They asked the State Fire Marshal's Office to assist in determining the cause. Veronica Beasley didn't have much. The few possessions she cherished were destroyed when something in her apartment caught fire Thursday morning. "She has an electric chair that she uses to massage her back and legs. We're looking at that direction. We're not sure if that's the cause yet," said Inspector Mark James, Sanford Fire Department. When she returned, she said her place was engulfed in flames. They were so intense, she said she couldn't go back inside to call 911. Beasley suspects faulty wiring is to blame. She apparently complained to the housing authority about electrical problems in the past. "She says electrical outlets would shock her when she would touch them, so we're going to investigate the cause of that as well," James said. Calls to the housing authority went unanswered. According to volunteers with the American Red Cross, Beasley will immediately be placed in a different unit. Her neighbors will also have a new place to live early next week. Meanwhile, the Sanford Fire Department will be researching the make and model of the chair to see if it has had any recalls.
