The report said man trapped under a bus. Richmond's Bravest shifted into high gear and responded.
On October 5, at 1500 hours Quint 6 (ALS), Quint 5, Rescue 1 and Battalion 1 were toned out for an accident with a person trapped.
Rescue one's rig was in the shop and they responded as an engine company. Because of this, Rescue one's officer, Lt. Ray Neville, requested that dispatch add an additional rescue company to the assignment due to the fact that they did not have a full compliment of cribbing.
Quint 6 arrived on the scene and advised they had one patient trapped under a commercial bus. The acting officer of Quint 6 requested a third rescue company be added to the assignment and advised that they would be stabilizing the vehicle in anticipation of an air bag rescue.
Officials said all three rescue companies along with Quint 6 and Quint 5, utilized two low pressure airbags and two high pressure airbags placed in various locations under the bus to facilitate lifting the bus to free the man.
The patient was 72 years old, officials said, and was alert and talking to the rescuers.
The extrication was accomplished and the patient was transported to VCU Medical Center with two medics from Quint 6 responding with Richmond Ambulance.
Despite the valiant efforts of all personnel involved, the victim died a short time later at the hospital.
