Two Critical After Ohio Home Explodes
SMITH TOWNSHIP, Ohio --
A house explosion sent a family to the hospital Tuesday morning, NewsChannel5 reported.
Three fire departments responded to the blast and fire at 4 a.m. at a house on West Pine Lake Road in Smith Township, between Youngstown and Canton in Mahoning County.
Beloit fire officials said a mother, father and two teenage children were taken to MetroHealth Medical Center. Willard Woods Jr., 44, Megan, 44, were reported in critical condition in the burn unit. Jake, 18, and Jenessa, 16, were admitted to the unit in good condition, spokeswoman Susan Christopher said.
"We got woken up by the explosion. It shook the house," said a neighbor, Greg Wilson, 31.
When he looked outside, he saw flames from the house reaching as high as the tops of mature pine trees.
Another neighbor, Debbie Visi, said the blast knocked her out of bed. She awoke to see the residents -- a husband and wife and their two teenage children -- running toward her home.
The cause of the explosion is under investigation. Sebring Fire Chief Jim Cannell asked the state fire marshal to help.
The home's owner, Lewis Woods, uncle to the man living in the house, estimated the value of the home at $100,000.
