Two children are being treated for smoke inhalation after a house fire broke out overnight Thursday at a Lorain home.

A 6-year-old girl and an infant boy were pulled from the second-floor fire, which started around 2:30 a.m. at the Cornell Place home.

The house's only adult occupant at the time, 26-year-old Damian Neal, was able to get 5-month-old Ladainian Neal out of the fire, but could not get to the other child, Malaya Simmons.

Firefighter Shaun Lloyd found the girl near a second-floor window, where she was unconscious under a blanket.

The children and Neal were taken to MetroHealth Medical Center and were treated for smoke inhalation.

The baby is expected to be released Friday. The girl remains in critical condition, but the fire chief told NewsChannel5 that her condition will likely be upgraded soon.

Two firefighters, including Lloyd, were also treated for minor injuries.

Officials say the fire was caused by a space heater.
