An Independence Township woman's home caught fire when she tried to run electricity through a generator during a power outage Monday.

Strong winds that swept through the area Sunday resulted in a power outage at Dorothy Nalepa's home, Local 4 reported. Nalepa said she used a gas-powered generator to provide electricity to her house.

Nalepa said she was having breakfast Monday morning when she heard a "pop" and realized something was wrong.

The generator caught fire and the flames spread to the attic and a bedroom of the house, Local 4 reported.

The generator is housed in a wooden box, which firefighters said was located too close to her house.

"Not next to the house or in a wooden container," said Independence Township Fire Lt. Chris Norberg about the generator's location.

The extent of damage was not known.
