Fire caused $75,000 damage to a North Side apartment complex Tuesday morning.

Firefighters said five units were damaged in the complex in the 500 block of McCarty.

Investigators said it appears an elderly resident fell asleep while smoking a cigarette, which came in contact with a sofa.

"I thought it was thunder and lightning," said Arty Escobar, one of the residents whose unit was damaged. "But when I opened the door, flames started coming in. Man, I thought I was going to die."

Two people were treated for smoke inhalation at the scene.
