A Missouri City firefighter created a mural to remember the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, KPRC Local 2 reported Monday.

Firefighter Matt Rios painted the 4 foot by 4 foot mural inside the Missouri City firehouse on Texas Parkway near Court Road.

"I just wanted to honor the 343 firefighters that died that day," Rios said. "They made the ultimate sacrifice, and I just wanted it to be known here in our firehouse. I wanted it to be a daily reminder for us to stay focused on our jobs, especially when we're going to fires."

The mural shows a firefighter's helmet, the Twin Towers, a New York Fire Department badge and the number 343.

Rios said the hardest part of the mural was finding time to work on it between emergency calls.

"I'd mix the paint and the tones would go off," Rios said. "I'd have to set it down and if it was a fire, then it would take all day for us to get back, so the paint would dry."

The mural was completed in about two months.

Rios sent a photograph of the mural to Engine 10 and Ladder 33 in New York City.
