Overnight Fire Kills 3-Year-Old Maryland Boy
An overnight fire in Landover Hills, Md., has killed a 3-year-old boy and sent five other people to the hospital.
Fire officials said the fire broke out about 2:15 a.m., in the 67600 block of Fairwood Road and when firefighters arrived, there was heavy fire showing from the home. Firefighters were also alerted that there were children inside the house.
Fire department spokesman Mark Brady the heaviest fire was in the living room area of the home and that is the area where investigators believe the fire started.
Brady said the fire was quickly knocked down and three children were rescued from the home, a 6-year-old male and a set of 3-year old twins. They were transported to a local hospital, but one of the 3-year-olds was later pronounced dead.
Officials said the other 3-year-old is in serious condition and the 6-year old is in critical condition.
An adult male in his 50s sustained a head injury upon exiting the home out of a bedroom window, Brady said. He attempted to reenter the home to rescue the children and sustained serious burns.
Officials said three other adults suffered minor injuries.
A smoke alarm was present Brady said, but it was not operational.
Fire officials said they have ruled out foul play and the exact cause of the fire remains under investigation.
