SAN ANTONIO --
Smoke alarms are being credited with helping alert a family to a fire in their home early Friday on the city's Northwest Side.
Maria De La Paz said she was watching TV around midnight when she heard several smoke alarms in her home in the 9400 block of Arcadia Creek go off.
De La Paz's husband began looking for signs of a fire when he found smoke coming from the closet of his 13-year-old granddaughter's room.
The teen, who was asleep at the time, was quickly awakened by her frantic grandparents.
"She was like in another world," De La Paz said. "She didn't notice that her room was on fire."
Everyone was able to get out of the home safely.
Firefighters quickly put out the fire, which caused about $15,000 in damage.
A cause is under investigation.
