The National Fire Protection Association has released its latest findings on U.S. fire loss last year.
The group based their findings on surveys completed by fire departments nationwide responding to their 2006 National Fire Experience Survey.
Researchers found that in 2006:
- Public fire departments in the United States responded to 1,642,500 fires.
- There were an estimated 524,000 structure fires reported to fire departments in 2006, an increase of 2.5 percent from 2005.
- Of structure fires reported, 412,500 were residential fires
- Of all the fires reported in 2006, an estimated 3,245 resulted in civilian deaths - a decrease of 11.7 percent from 2005.
The report appears in the September/October edition of the NFPA Journal.
