A retired firefighter is being called a hero after he helped rescue people from a burning Hartford apartment building Wednesday morning.

Firefighters were called Wednesday morning to the fire at The Beach apartment building at 70 Allen Place.

The two-alarm blaze sent smoke over the neighborhood as onlookers broke away from breakfast to watch.

The fire was reported out shortly after 9 a.m., NBC 30 News reported.

There were at least a dozen tenants inside when a retired firefighter, Hector Fernandez, spotted the smoke and called 911.

Fernandez entered the building upon finding out that a woman in a wheelchair was on the second floor.

"As I opened the door to the corridor, the hallway was fully charged with smoke and I could just see frame of person," Fernandez told NBC 30 News.

The woman was taken to Hartford Hospital and treated for smoke inhalation.

Ambulances were called to the location; however, there are no reports of injuries.
