Meth Lab Found after Fla. Blaze

Nine people were evacuated from the building after firefighters detected a strange odor.

One man was critically hurt in a fire at a New Smyrna Beach apartment complex on Wednesday.

It happened at the Greenbrier Apartment Complex on Roberts Street, WESH 2 News reported.

Firefighters found a 43-year-old man outside an apartment building with burns from his face to his feet, and after two inspections, investigators said a meth lab was inside an upstairs apartment.

When firefighters arrived, a strange odor led them to the suspected lab. Nine people were evacuated from the eight-unit building before a hazardous materials team was called.

"The materials that were found are consistent and show that the occupant was in the process of manufacturing methamphetamines," New Smyrna Beach spokeswoman Shannon Lewis said.

The victim told authorities he was using chemicals to clean something when they exploded. Volusia County narcotics agents are investigating.
