The engine was placed out of service after the Saturday incident.

A Maryland volunteer firefighter injured in a fall from a fire engine Saturday has been released from the hospital.

The 20-year volunteer with the Riverdale Vol. Fire Dept. was riding in the left side jump seat when he tumbled from the engine, and landed on the highway.

He suffered head injuries, and was treated at Suburban Hospital, a trauma center.

The Seagrave engine he fell from was a reserve piece from Prince Georges County on loan to Riverdale, a volunteer said Monday. The victim was wearing turnout gear. However, a fellow volunteer said he did not know if he was wearing a seat belt.

After the crash, a county safety officer placed the engine out of service. A probe into the incident is being conducted, said Mark Brady, county fire department spokesman.
