A portion of the building collapsed on the firefighter.

Firefighters are trying to figure out what started a four-alarm blaze in Shadyside Thursday.

It happened at an apartment building in the 5400 block of Elmer Street.

The fire started in the third floor of the building just before 3:30 a.m. Thursday.

Crews said the fire caused $200,000 worth of damage.

One firefighter was injured after a part of the building collapsed on him.

"We were standing here watching the fire and walls started collapsing, said Ian Derba, an Elmer Street resident. There was a guy underneath of it, and it fell on top of him. We started running."

The firefighter was taken to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital.

No information has been released on his condition.
