PLANTATION, Fla. -- A police officer and a firefighter are dead after what police called a "domestic situation" in Plantation on Friday evening.

The deaths in the 800 block of Northwest 98th Avenue are believed to be a possible murder-suicide, and a third person who tried to stop the fight was injured, NBC 6's Sharon Lawson reported.

The female Plantation police officer and the male Plantation firefighter were arguing for some time before the fight escalated and shots were fired, Lawson reported.

"The police officer's got four years of experience; the firefighter has 10. I can't release their identities because we haven't notified their next of kin yet," said Sgt. Al Butler of the Plantation Police Department. "We haven't been able to get all the information, but the preliminary indicated that it was some kind of domestic situation."

The police officer and firefighter had been dating for about a year.

"I guess she was trying to push herself inside the door, and he was closing it on her, as if he was trying to tell her to get out of the house. She didn't listen. She got inside, and we just heard a lot of arguing," said Howard Lover, a neighbor.

"It's really sad because we could've called the police, like, a couple of days ago, stopped this," said Jasmine Matthews, a neighbor.

"We didn't think they'd take it this far," Lover said.

Those who knew the couple said they did not know they were having problems, but neighbors said they were fighting every day.
