Two Hurt Jumping From Burning Chicago Building

A man who jumped from the second floor was in serious to critical condition and two police officers and a woman were also hurt after a fire raged through an abandoned West Side building Monday morning. Fire crews received the first call of the fire, at a two-story, brick building on the 5500 block of West Augusta Boulevard, at 5:21 a.m. and an EMS Plan 1 and a still-and-box alarm were called at 5:22 a.m., according to Fire Media Affairs Spokesman Richard Rosado. The blaze was under control at 5:41 a.m., he said.
A man who jumped from the second floor was taken to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood in serious to critical condition after suffering multiple injuries, according to Rosado. A woman who was rescued from the building was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in fair condition, he said.
Two police officers who were apparently helping rescue the residents suffered smoke inhalation and were taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in good condition, Rosado said.
The fire had been burning throughout the whole building, which was vacant, he said.
A preliminary report said a woman and a man had been hanging out of a second floor window of a building, where the fire broke out, according to police Bomb & Arson Section Sgt. Roger Elmer. The woman may have attempted to reach a van by jumping, but missed, according to the sergeant.
