Fire Detroys N.C. Town's Downtown

SPRUCE PINE, N.C. --

A state of emergency has been declared in the small mountain town of Spruce Pine, N.C., after a fire over the weekend that destroyed much of the towns business area.

At least 10 businesses were gutted by the fires, that started just before 2 a.m. on Saturday. Several offices, businesses and a church were destroyed by the fire.

Spruce Pine Fire Chief David Hughes said Monday morning that all of the fires were contained and under control.

But town officials said that the downtown are is closed until further notice.

Mayor Wes Foy declared a state of emergency and issued a 24-hour curfew for Oak Avenue and Locust Avenue, also referred to as Upper and Lower streets.

The State Bureau of Investigations Arson Task Force is investigating the fires.
