Henrico Virginia Firefighters Battle Fatal Fire

July 25, 2006
Firefighters started investigating a smoke smell in the area.

Crew members from Henrico Fire Division Engine #11 were out in the district around 0800 hours on July 22, for a food supply run, when a smoke smell was detected.

Henrico Battalion Chief Steve Wood said E-11 began an immediate investigation of the district. The smell had not yet been reported to 911 operators.

"The crew discovered a tri-level structure at Shewalt Drive with heavy smoke from all points," Wood explained.

A call was issued for backup crews and additional apparatus, the Battalion Chief said.

Crews initiated an intense search inside the structure for any trapped victims and discovered an elderly man. The man was pulled out of the burning structure and transported to a local hospital.

Officials said the fire was spreading and had extended up the walls to the attic.

With 5-inch supply line and 1 ¾ inch initial attack lines an aggressive operation had the blaze under control in about half an hour.

Fire Medic 11 set up for RIT.

Because of heat conditions both inside the structure and due to high summer humidity rehab was performed.

Responding to the scene were: Engine 11, Engine 5, Medic 11, Truck 12, Truck 1 and Battalion 3. A call for an additional engine summoned E-15. A further request was issued and responding were Air Utility 12, Battalion 1, EMS and Engine 12.

Officials said the patient did not survive. Published reports said the man was suffering from MS.

Wood said the home had a working smoke detector that was going off.

The cause of the fire is under investigation..
