Fire Displaces Florida Retirement Home Residents

No one was hurt in the fire in Miami-Dade County.

Thirty-five residents of a South Florida retirement home had to be relocated Thursday night after a fire at their living facility.

Firefighters said a short in a circuit breaker apparently caused the fire at Breezy Acres Assisted Living, located on 175th Street in northwest Miami-Dade County.

No one was injured, but fire crews determined that the building was not safe for the people who lived there.

"Our main concern is that there are special needs," said Freddy Zelaya of the American Red Cross. "We're working with county resources as well as the manager here to see that the folks that have been displaced have a living facility to be relocated to."

The residents were taken by ambulance to another facility in Pompano Beach.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
