A Columbus fire lieutenant died from injuries he suffered in a motorcycle crash early Tuesday.

Investigators said Lt. Richard S. Mileff lost control of his motorcycle, struck a curb and was ejected from the bike.

Officers were notified of a crash at Preservation Avenue and Stonewalk Lane shortly after 12:30 a.m., according to a news release issued by the Columbus Division of Police.

They found Mileff's body along a grassy area, across the street from where the motorcycle was lying near a sidewalk, NBC 4 's Duarte Geraldino reported.

Mileff, 43, of New Albany, was transported to St. Ann's Hospital with life-threatening injuries and was pronounced dead about an hour later, police said.

Mileff was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, police said.

Mileff joined the Columbus Division Division of Fire in 1989 and was promoted to lieutenant in 1998.

He was assigned to the Ladder Company at Station 2, 2-Unit. He also served as a certified paramedic, EMS officer, bomb squad and hazardous materials technician and member of the division's Dive and Rescue Team (D.A.R.T.).
