JACKSONVILLE, Fla. --

What began as a response to a house fire in East Arlington overnight ended with a man dead in a police-involved shooting.

As firefighters responded to the 2100 block of Alfa Romeo Drive about midnight, witnesses pointed out a red car leaving the scene. Police followed the car until it stopped in a cul-de-sac. As officers approached, they said the driver had a gun to his head.

"This individual got of the car, still with the gun," Jacksonville Sheriff's Office Assistant Chief Dwaine Senterfitt said. "Eventually (he went) up the driveway to the house. As he was going that he fired at least one shot, then ran between the houses."

More officers arrived and surrounded the man. After an exchange of gunfire, the man was shot several times by officers and died at the scene.

The man's name was not immediately released.

At the home where the incident started, no one was inside and there were no injuries in the fire. According to Jacksonville-Fire Rescue spokesman Tom Francis, arson was suspected in the blaze, which caused an estimated $200,000 damage.

Police expect to hold a news conference on Tuesday to release information about the victim of the shooting and more details about the case.
