SHERMAN OAKS, Calif. --
One of the largest trees in Los Angeles is still lying on a house Tuesday in Sherman Oaks after falling on it Saturday.
The 100-foot-tall pine that had been leaning fell onto a house, uprooting gas lines and downing power lines, leaving a mess for crews to clean up, authorities said.
A 2-year-old girl and a baby sitter were in the two-story home in the 14000 block of Sutton Place when the tree came crashing down on the house's garage and nearby power lines about noon, said d'Lisa Davies of the Los Angeles Fire Department.
The toddler, Chloe Curtis, and her baby sitter, were not injured, Davies said.
Jogger Paul Serbin saw the tree come down and called 911 from a neighbor's house.
Bonnie Curtis, along with her husband and daughter, had just moved into the multimillion-dollar home about a month ago, and an arborist who lives in the neighborhood had tried to warn them that the tree was about to fall.
When the tree fell, underground gas lines that were intertwined with the roots ended up 3 feet in the air, and power lines were knocked down, Davies said.
The gas line will have to be replaced, she said.
Some homes were without power as crews worked to chop up the massive tree to get to the lines, she said.
Firefighters said that the tree's large branches broke its fall and that the damage could have been a lot worse.
The tree is reportedly 100 years old.
The wind was not believed to have been strong enough to have blown over the tree, and authorities believe it fell because it was already leaning and had short roots, Davies said.
