Six people were hospitalized after a house fire in Malden early Monday.
NewsCenter 5's Gail Huff reported that it was just before 3 a.m. when a call came in that flames were showing at a two-family house on Eastie Street.
Eight people live in the residence and firefighters arrived just in time to make life-saving rescues. Only two residents could be accounted for when fire crews first arrived. Their first job was to find the remaining six residents.
"I had companies going inside to search and rescue because we had reports of people on the roof and we felt we had more people inside and we rescued three people off the rear roof with ladders. We rescued an adult and two children," Malden Deputy Fire Chief Thomas Walsh said.
Those three people went to the hospital suffering from smoke inhalation. Three others also joined them later.
Officials said the fire started on the second floor in the front part of the house but they are still unsure of what started the blaze.
