Yacht Explosion Leaves Florida Woman Burned

The 31-foot cabin cruiser burned down to the water line.

A woman is in critical condition after a yacht in Pompano Beach burst into flames Thursday afternoon.

Witnesses said that they heard an explosion and then saw flames coming from the engine compartment of the yacht that was docked near 954 SE Tenth Way. They said they saw one woman jump into the water and two other people crawl off the yacht and onto the dock.

The 55-year-old woman who was in the engine compartment when the fire started was taken to North Broward Medical Center, where she is in critical condition with burns over 30 percent of her body.

There was no word on the condition of the other two people.

Firefighters said the 31-foot Wellcraft cabin cruiser is a total loss. The yacht burned all the way down to the water line.

The cause of the fire in under investigation.
