Chicago Fire Truck Crashes En Route to Blaze

One person was critically injured when a Chicago fire engine struck a vehicle, reportedly a van, on the North Side while responding to a fire in Streeterville on Monday afternoon.

The accident occurred at Clybourn Avenue and Halsted Street as the fire engine was responding to the fire at 600 N. Fairbanks Court, which was reported just after 1 p.m., according to Fire Media Affairs Chief Kevin MacGregor.

The engine collided with another vehicle, reportedly a van. A civilian was injured and taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in critical condition, MacGregor said.

The fire to which the crew was responding broke out at a building under construction Fairbanks Court and Ohio Street.

Smoke was seen coming from portions of the building, designed by famed architect Helmut Jahn.

All 125 workers at the construction site were safely evacuated, but a witness told NBC5 that at least one person was treated at the scene.

Traffic on nearby streets, including Ohio and Fairbanks streets, was being rerouted in the area.

A still-and-box alarm was called for the building just after 1 p.m., according to Fire Media Affairs Chief Kevin MacGregor.

The building has been under construction in the Streeterville neighborhood since early 2006.
