Illinois Woman Tosses Child, Jumps from Burning Apartment

The 25-year-old woman suffered non-life threatening injuries after the jump.

RICHTON PARK, Ill. --

Police and fire officials are investigating a suspicious blaze in a Richton Park apartment building Wednesday morning that injured a woman after she jumped from her third-floor apartment to escape the fire.

The fire happened about 4:35 a.m. in the 4000 block of Heartland Drive in a six-unit, three-story apartment building, Richton Park police said.

A 25-year-old woman suffered non-life threatening injuries after jumping from her apartment, police said. Before jumping, police said she tossed her child to someone who caught the child on the ground.

The woman and child were transported to St. James Hospital in Olympia Fields. Their conditions are unknown.

Richton Park police and the state fire marshal's office are investigating.
