COVINGTON, Ky. --

A mother and two children escaped a fire by jumping from the window of their Covington apartment.

Errica Williams, 28, said she awoke Sunday morning to the smell of smoke filling her apartment and realized there was only one safe exit.

"I had both of my children with me and I knew there was nothing else to go but out the window, Williams said.

Williams said her 9-year-old son and 8-year-old daughter were afraid to jump from the window onto a patio below, so she jumped first and told the children she would catch them.

I said, OK, mommy's here come on, jump, and that's when they jumped into my arms, Williams said.

Flames roared on the other side of a sliding door that leads to the patio, Williams said.

"I kept saying, Most gracious and merciful God, most gracious and merciful God, (and) that's when I said, OK, now we have to get down to the ground, Williams said.

Neighbors heard her calls for help and caught each child as they jumped nearly 10 feet to the ground, Williams said.

"I'm just blessed that me and my children made it out of there, she said.

One firefighter injured his knee when he fell through a burned-out floor inside the apartment, officials said.

Investigators have not determined the cause of the blaze.
