FDNY Rescues Husband, Wife from River

Four firefighters from a marine unit could be seen in the water rescuing the couple.

A man and woman were hospitalized Friday night after the FDNY pulled them from the chilly waters of the East River off Lower Manhattan, NewsChannel 4 reported.

Four firefighters from a marine unit could be seen in the water rescuing the couple, huddling around them and holding them afloat before getting them to dry land.

A call came in to police sometime around 5 p.m. Friday that a woman had fallen off Pier Six near the downtown Manhattan heliport.

When firefighters arrived, they saw a man struggling to hold his wife's head above water. She was unconscious.

"They looked very cold, and they were there for some time," said firefighter Steve MacAnulty, one of the rescuers in the water.

Luckily, the engine house was just a few blocks away from the pier. But the rescue was still tricky due to the current of the water and its temperature, which firefighters estimated to be in the 40s.

The 35-year-old woman was at Bellevue Hospital Center in serious condition with hypothermia. Her husband was in stable condition at a downtown hospital.

Police and fire were still investigating the incident.
