Mom, 5 Kids Escape Indianapolis Condo Fire

At least two units were destroyed and two more were damaged.

A mother and five children escaped a huge fire on Indianapolis' west side as flames shot through the roof and out the windows at a condominium complex.

The fire broke out at the Chapel Ridge condo complex, near 10th Street and Country Club Road, at about 10:30 p.m. Thursday, 6News' Julie Pursley reported.

At least two units were destroyed and two more were damaged. Additionally, at least two vehicles were destroyed.

At about 6:30 a.m., the fire sprang up again, but was quickly knocked down again.

Investigators said they think the fire began in the condo in which the mother and children stayed and that it might have been sparked by food that was left on a stove. Fire crews said the occupants of that unit were extremely fortunate to have escaped without injury.

"I heard somebody either screaming or arguing, and I went back in the house and got my son," said neighbor Linda Foxworthy. "He called 911 right away, but had a hard time explaining where he was at and how to get in here."

There are several dead-end streets nearby and the complex is relatively secluded, Pursley reported.

Fire crews were able to get the blaze under control in about an hour, despite struggling with water pressure problems.

The woman and children are now staying in a townhome in the same complex.
