Balcony Collapse Traps Eight in California

It took Pasadena firefighters about an hour to rescue the eight people trapped inside.

Eight people were temporarily trapped in a Pasadena doctor's office Thursday when an outside walkway collapsed, a fire official said.

The outside walkway and balcony, which was part of an interior atrium where construction had been under way, collapsed about 9:20 a.m. at 221 E. Walnut St., authorities said.

The collapsed walkway blocked the door to a doctor's office. It took Pasadena firefighters about an hour to rescue the eight people trapped inside, said Lisa Derderian with the Pasadena Fire Department.

"They were all very calm," she said.

There were no reported injuries, although 100 people were evacuated from the two-story office building.

The walkway itself appeared to be under construction, but the cause of the collapse is still under investigation, Derderian said.
