The National Volunteer Fire Council Heart-Healthy Firefighter Program has used former NFL quarterback great Joe Montana to give those who want a healthier lifestyle exciting recipes in his cook book. Now it has gone a step farther.

Erron Kinney, star tight end for the NFL's Tennessee Titans, is attending their round of fire shows and promoting in his way the Heart-Healthy Firefighter Program. In San Diego at Firehouse World, Kinney spoke with Firehouse.com about his love of the fire service.

But his healthy lifestyle promotion comes with a passion for the fire service. He was a junior firefighter at age 13 in Ashland, Virginia. In January 2006, he was promoted to lieutenant in the Williamson County Rescue Squad, Station 22, in Grassland, Tennessee. He is also a deputy chief for the Shady Grove Fire Department in Hickman County, Tennessee.

"Any town I visit I have to go the fire station. My wife knows she has to block out a couple of hours for me to go to the fire station", Kinney said. He even tries to keep up his membership in the New York state department of her home town.

At 6-6, 275 lbs, Kinney is not only one of the team's primary playmakers but also a physical run blocker and pass protector. He attended the University of Florida. He was originally drafted by the Titans in the third round (68th overall) of the 2000 NFL Draft.

Hundreds of firefighters and EMS personnel received free blood pressure, cholesterol, and glucose screenings at the Heart-Healthy Firefighter booth and learned how the combination of nutrition, exercise, and health awareness can help prevent heart attack, which is the leading cause of firefighter deaths.
