The Fire Department says it will add 10 weeks to the current 13 week training session for new firefighters beginning next month.

The department wants to spend more time on safety training before recruits are actually put on the job. The training also compensates for relaxed requirements for previous experience and education.

Fire officials say they want to dedicate more time to educating firefighters on building construction, so they'll have a better idea of what to expect when they get inside a burning building.

Unexpected structural issues have played a role in the majority of recent firefighter deaths. The new training will be phased in starting next month.
